About Me
Hello, I'm Christine Laframboise, the founder and owner of Waxwing Yarn Company. My love for wool and knitting runs deep, but my passion for reducing my environmental impact, especially within the textile industry, drives everything I do.
The idea for Waxwing Yarn started several years ago when I was searching for local wool options and had a challenging time finding just the right product for my projects. At the same time, I was growing frustrated by the large stash of wool I was accumulating and wished I could purchase the yarn I wanted in smaller quantities to reduce my waste. Ultimately, I wished to make more purposeful purchases and minimize any surplus.
Waxwing Yarn was born from my belief in the exceptional quality of Canadian wool, the need for smaller volume yarn options, and my desire to create a safe and inclusive space where all makers can come together and share their craft. Our mission is to offer premium, ethically sourced yarn that embodies sustainability, craftsmanship, and creativity.
Through Waxwing Yarn, I hope to inspire a community that values the artistry of all textile arts while committing to eco-conscious practices. Together, let's craft a brighter, more sustainable future, one stitch at a time.

The Story Behind Our Name and Logo
Colour motivates me to keep crafting, initiates new project ideas, and brings me immense joy. The daily hues I see in flora and fauna inspire me, and the cedar waxwing bird was the most striking example. Our brand name, Waxwing Yarn, comes from my greatest colour inspiration, as do all the colours of yarn we offer.
Our logo vividly portrays connectedness and community, key elements of the brand’s identity. Featuring a dynamic pattern of multiple birds flying together, it symbolizes unity, collaboration, and the collective spirit of the crafting community. The birds’ wings emulate both yarn fringes and hands, reinforcing the theme of crafting and support.
This design encapsulates Waxwing Yarn’s mission to offer premium fine wool yarn with a deep ethical connection to the source while fostering a supportive and inclusive community where artisans feel a strong sense of belonging and purpose. It represents a collective journey towards a future where creativity, sustainability, and social responsibility intersect seamlessly.
Our Commitment to Reducing Textile Waste
-
Untreated, Natural Yarns for a Greener Future
At Waxwing Yarn, we are deeply committed to minimizing our environmental impact. None of our yarn is treated, making it 100% free of petrochemicals and completely biodegradable. While we strive to reduce the amount of leftover yarn from our projects, we acknowledge that achieving zero waste is not always realistic.
-
Repurposing Yarn Waste through Creative Solutions
We take full ownership of all our waste, including yarn ends and other lengths too small to resell or use. This means we will never throw out any yarn. Instead, all collected yarn will be repurposed to create felted fabrics and reimagined into new projects. By doing so, we ensure that every fiber of Waxwing Yarn contributes to a sustainable and eco-friendly crafting experience.
-
Empowering Our Customers to Participate in our Recycling Initiatives
We are committed to staying curious and continuously improving our processes. To further support our wool recycling efforts, we are working towards launching a customer return-for-credit program. This initiative will enable all our community members to contribute directly to our recycling efforts and help us minimize textile waste even more effectively.

Building a Sustainable Crafting Community
We invite you to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media to stay updated on the development of this program. Engage with us on these platforms, share your ideas, and collaborate with us to find new and more effective ways to use recycled yarn. Together, we can craft responsibly and create a brighter, more sustainable future, one stitch at a time.

Yarn Characteristics
Please note that Waxwing Yarn is a natural product and, as such, may contain slight variations. While we strive to ensure each skein is free of knots or breakage, it is possible that your yarn may include knots or areas with thick and thin textures. These variations are part of the yarn’s natural charm and do not affect its quality or durability.

Colours
We do our best to photograph and present the colours of our yarn as accurately as possible. However, please note that variations in dye lots and differences in computer monitors may result in slight inconsistencies between what you see online and the actual product. We appreciate your understanding.
